He sleeps.
But I do not.

I watch.
Breath baited,
I wait.

The silence of tonight,
Resting lashes against cheeks relaxed into babyhood,
Belies the squeaks,
The beeps.

He sleeps
But I do not.

  1. Oh God Nancy, this took me back to the first days at home with the heart monitor… Natty in a crib, I on the sofa next to her, too afraid to sleep deeply in a bed and too afraid that upstairs would be too warm for her. So few words can evoke so much. H x
